Q: We're looking for a DJ for our wedding. So far, we like what we see. Can we meet you in person before we decide?
A: Absolutely. My office is in La Mesa, CA and I set up appointments for this very purpose almost anytime during the week including evenings. Weekends are available as well but due to weddings, scheduling is a bit tighter. The session is low key - there is no hard sell, no pressure to close the deal. I'm one person, so you'll either like me or not. A video presentation is part of the appointment so you can see me in action.
Q: Does your fee include everything? Is there a deposit envolved?
A: In the vast majority of cases, yes. You only pay for the time I actually play music for. Setup, travel time, pre-reception meeting are all part of the fee. To book a date, I require a 50% deposit. with the balance due on the day of the event.
Q: May we choose songs and, if so, how many?
A: Of course. Your song choices help me in preparing for your event. It's not neccessary to choose alot of music. Just give me your favorite songs and artists and a taste for what you think your guests will enjoy- 20 songs or so. It's my job to "read the crowd" and play the right songs at the right time and we don't know exactly what your guests will dance to until the party starts. My experience is such that I know the best dance songs for the group right off the top of my head. It's a good idea to give me leeway to choose songs that will appeal to everyone. But this is your party and, when it's comes right down to it, I'll play whatever you want within reason.
Q: We have no experience hiring a DJ, Any advice on what to look for?
A: It is a "buyer beware" market. But there are many great DJ's out there. Referrals are probably the best method but even that isn't perfect. What works for one person may not work for you. Best thing to do is go with your gut feeling. Do I feel comfortable with this person? Do his/her references check out? Does he/she conduct themselves in a professional manner. Does their personality match your expectation of their performance at your party? (i.e. do you want someone upbeat and energetic and your potential DJ is quiet and reserved.) Price is a determining factor in some cases. Over all, the lowest priced DJ's are the ones you need to be careful with. On the other side, an expensive DJ is no guarantee either. In most cases, you'll know the right one when you find him/her. Many of my clients knew almost immediately that I was their choice. Others may have felt the opposite way! Don't worry, you'll know when you find the right one whether is by referral or advertisements.
